Although I hadn’t formally named it until now, this approach has consistently helped students navigate complex problems with greater confidence.
Introducing the R.E.A.D.Y. Math Strategy™
The R.E.A.D.Y. acronym stands for:
- R: Read with Purpose – Carefully read the problem to understand what’s being asked.
- E: Examine Key Terms – Identify and clarify any unfamiliar terms.
- A: Act Out, Visualize, or Model – Draw a picture, diagram, or act it out to show relationships and structure.
- D: Decide & Do the Math – Choose an operation or process and solve. Show all steps clearly.
- Y: Your Turn to Reflect – Check for reasonableness. Be able to prove your answer.
This strategy fosters a deeper understanding by encouraging students to engage with the problem both linguistically and mathematically.
